A New Sprinkler System Brings New Income
Gayathri, a farmer from south-east India, has always worked hard. After her husband died, the widow became the sole provider for her two children. Three consecutive years of drought left Gayathri in a hopeless situation: “The land was totally dry, I planted peanut seeds but nothing grew. My family was starving.”
“Then the Rural Development Trust (RDT) installed a drip irrigation system on my land, and now I can grow chilis. My income has tripled and I can ensure my children’s education,” says Gayathri, unable to repress a huge smile.
“Since I have drip irrigation, my land is fertile and I can live on it. It’s a great relief to know that my children’s education doesn’t depend on whether it rains or not.”
RDT has been working with the most disadvantaged communities in southern India to transform parched land into fertile farmland for over 50 years.
Thanks to the generous support of donors, in 2021 RDT installed irrigation systems for 1,486 farmers’ families and built 393 water structures.
Together with our donors, we will continue to work to protect the environment and support projects that secure the livelihoods of thousands of families.
